GALA NIGHT 2014

Once again our STARS gala night to end the year's program of events was a ripping success, playing to a capacity audience at Waverley Homestead.

Peter Colling was (of course) the MC, as always urbane, witty and hilarious. All performers gave generously of their time.

We kicked off with a bracket of songs from Sidonie Henbest, who will be back for a concert in next year's program, followed up with another wonderful original poem from Nancy Weisbrodt, and were then regaled by a set of songs from the Farmer's Market Choir, who just get better and better under the musical direction of Johnathon Waetford.

As always it fell to Peter Colling and Wayne Anthoney to lower the tone, with a quiztime skit. Elizabeth Boydell was involved as well. Judging by the laughter it went very well although numerous of the questions were not strictly PC and that is a good thing.

Interval. A fine spread of hors d'oevres as always. Yum.

Second half. Two beautiful belly dancers, then a further lowering of the tone with Peter and Wayne performing another of Peter's pieces, this time in the roles of Batman and Superman in a nursing home at the age of seventy four. Both on various medications, incontinent and racked with mortal ailments. Batman with a walking frame, Superman with a walking stick.

Meredith Bowman then presented this year's Stars of Waverley award to guitarist Aiden Ryan, who then played for us his audition piece which was quite extra-ordinary. The guitar was tuned to an open chord rather than conventionally and in addition to playing harmonics interspersed with chords Aiden used various parts of his guitar for percussion. He will be using his prizemoney to buy a really good guitar and he well merits it.

Our final act was the wonderful singer Peter Butcher at the piano, fantastic as always. Carolyn ended proceedings by drawing the raffle. It was a joyous night and a good fund-raiser for STARS.
