ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Held at The Show Hall, Willunga

Friday 15th March 2019, at 6 pm

Business

 

Chair Report for 2018 Presented by Carolyn Colling. See Attachment 1.

Motion that it be accepted (Tess Young / Helen Blake). Agreed.

 

Treasurer’s Report. Peter Elder said this has already been circulated to the membership. See Attachment 2.

Motion that it be accepted (Murray Young / Paul Bell) Agreed.

 

Election of Officers

 

Peter Colling acting as Returning Officer declared all committee positions vacant and called for nominations. As expected there were none and Carolyn Colling therefore proposed that we accept the resolution, previously circulated, that STARS be wound up and discontinued immediately. This was agreed to without dissent.

 

The resolution previously circulated:

In the event that insufficient nominations and acceptances are received,

the following motion be put before the meeting –

‘That Southern Theatre and Arts Supporters Incorporated be wound up and the assets of the Association be distributed in accordance with the Constitution’.

 

 

Any Other Business

Murray Young proposed thanks to the committee – Carolyn Colling, Peter Elder and Wayne Anthoney, for their excellent work in running STARS for the past decade and more.

 

There being no further business, the meeting closed at 6.15 pm.

 

 

APPENDIX 1

CHAIRMANS REPORT 2018

 

THE BARBER OF SEVILLE

OUR FIRST EVENT FOR THE YEAR ON WAS THE EVER POPULAR BARBER OF SEVILLE PRESENTED BY CO-OPERA AND FEATURING NEW MUSICAL DIRECTOR JOSH VAN KONKELENBERG WITH A FULL ORCHESTRA.

THE LARGE AUDIENCE CAME FROM OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY, ADELAIDE AND A GROUP FROM GOOLWA EVERYONE WAS IMPRESSED WITH THIS PRODUCTION DIRECTED BY TESSA BREMNER.  LOTS OF FUN AND FRIVOLITY WITH SOME OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCES – ONE OF THE BEST CO-OPERA PRESENTATIONS I HAVE EVER SEEN.

 

OPERA FOR PRIMARY SCHOOLS

A VERY SPECIAL OPERA EXPERIENCE FOR STUDENTS WAS ORGANISED BY STARS IN ASSOCIATION WITH ALI COLBECK HEAD OF WILLUNGA PRIMARY SCHOOL AND ON JUNE 13 STUDENTS FILED INTO THE SHOW HALL MOST WITH NO IDEA ABOUT OPERA.

STARS COMMITTEE CALLED ON GREG JOHN, FORMER ARTS CO-ORDINATOR AT TATACHILLA LUTHERAN COLLEGE (HIMSELF A MEMBER OF STATE OPERA,BIG SING, THE MESSIAH ETC.) GREG CHOSE CARMEN AS AN OPERA WITH PLENTY OF MUSIC  DRAMA AND DANCE AND WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF LOCAL OPERA SINGERS SAMANTHA RUBENHOLD AND ROBERT ENGLAND PRESENTED A FUN FILLED EVENT FOR THE CHILDREN.

THE SCHOOLS DANCE STUDENTS WERE TAUGHT A CARMEN PIECE AND SOME OF THE CHILDREN ASSISTED WITH MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS AND SINGING SOME OF THE POPULAR ARIAS.

IN CONVERSATION WITH ONE OF THE TEACHERS RECENTLY CHILDREN AND TEACHERS ALIKE WERE AMAZED AT THIS INTRODUCTION TO OPERA AND HOPE THAT IT CAN BE REPEATED SOON.

 

STAR OF GREECE EVENT

ON THE WEEKEND OF JULY A SERIES OF EVENTS WAS HELD IN AND AROUND ALDINGA TO COMMEMORATE THE 130TH ANNIVERSARY FO THE TRAGEDY OF THE WRECKING OF THE STAR OF GREECE, 2.3O AM FRIDAY 13 JULY 1888, 200 YARDS OFF THE SHORE AT PORT WILLUNGA.

STARS CONTRIBTION WAS TO HELP DEVISE AND PERFORM A REHEARSED READING OF THE CORONIAL INQUEST IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE HISTORY TRUST. 

IT PROVED TO BE AN ABSORBING EVENT AND WELL ATTENDED IN THE INSTITUTE IN ALDINGA – STARS CONTRIBUTED $200 TOWARDS THE MONUMENT THAT REMEMBERS THE 18 LOST IN THE DISASTER.

 

ADELAIDE YOUTH ORCHESTRA SEPTEMBER

THIS EVENT HAD BEEN ON THE STARS AGENDA FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS AND FINALLY IT CAME TO FRUITION – A PERFORMANCE THAT I ATTENDED AFFIRMED THE QUALITY AND PASSION OF THESE VERY YOUNG MUSICIANS AND I LIAISED WITH ADYO AND TATACHILLA COLLEGE IN ORDER TO ALLOW  AUDIENCE MEMBERS IN OUR REGION TO ENJOY A CONCERT.

THE PROGRAMME FEATURED CARNIVAL OVERTURE, A BASSOON SOLO AND THE WONDERFUL TCHAIKOVSKY SYMPHONY NO. 5.

UNFORTUNATELY THE AUDIENCE NUMBERS WERE DOWN BUT THE ORCHESTRA MEMBERS WERE TREATED TO OUR USUAL HOSPITALITY AND WERE APPRECIATIVE OF THE OPPORTUNITY TO PERFORM IN MCLAREN VALE.

 

BIG SING – TATACHILLA STADIUM

THE PROGRAMME FOR THIS YEAR FEATURED FAURE REQUIEM WITH LUKE DOLLMAN AS CONDUCTOR AND AN APPEARANCE BY GOSPEL GROOVE.

IT WAS AN OUTSTANDING DAY WITH A HIGHLIGHT BEING ELDER CONSERVATORIUM CHORALE AND OF COURSE GOSPEL GROOVE.

THE CHOIR NUMBERS WERE LARGE AND THE AUDIENCE FLOCKED TO THE EVENT WHERE THEY ENJOYED FOOD, WINE AND COFFEE ORGANISED BY THE BIG SING COMMITTEE WITH STARS COMMITTEE MEMBERS ASSISTING.

I HAVE CONTINUED IN THIS ROLE AND WILL ASSIST IN THE 2019 EVENT.

 

 

STARS GALA 2018

IT WAS AN EMOTIONAL NIGHT FOR STARS COMMITTEE WITH PLANS IN PLACE FOR THIS TO BE THE LAST GALA EVER.  THE USUAL COMEDY ROUTINES WERE PRESENTED AND NEWCOMER MEME THORNE STOLE THE SHOW.

THE HOT GOSPEL GROOVE CHOIR, ALL 50 OF THEM, WERE INVITED TO PERFORM AND ALSO TO STAY FOR THE REST OF THE SHOW AND PROVED TO BE A CROWD PLEASER.    THE MAIN EVENT FOR THE NIGHT WAS JAZZ IT UP WHO HAD THE AUDIENCE DANCING.

MY ANNOUNCEMENT OF RETIREMENT WAS MADE AFTER MY CHEEKY PERFORMANCE OF ALL THAT JAZZ .  

 

 

THE BUSINESS CALENDAR

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR INCLUDE STARS INITTIATIVE TO PRODUCE A ‘QUIRKY’ BUSINESS CALENDAR FEATURING ALL OF THE LOCAL BUSINESSES.

PETER COLLING DEVISED THEMES AND PHOTOS WHICH WERE COMPILED IN A CALENDAR AND LOCALS WERE ASKED TO ENTER A CAPTION COMPETITION WITH GREAT PRIZES TO BE WON.  THIS VENTURE RESULTED IN RAISING OVER $10,000 FOR WILLUNGA REC PARK.

 

MUSICA VIVA - EQUAL MUSIC PROGRAMME

OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS, STARS HAS PLEDGED $5,000 TO THIS PROGRAMME TO ENABLE LOW ADVANTAGED SCHOOL, I.E. ALDINGA BEACH PRIMARY,TO ENJOY MUSIC PRESENTATIONS BY VARIOUS PERFORMERS AND MUSICIANS AS PART OF THEIR EDUCATION, AS WELL AS LEARN A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT. 

STARS COMMITTEE IS PROUD OF OUR INVOLVEMENT WITH THIS PROGRAMME AS IT IS FULFILLING ANOTHER LONGSTANDING AIM TO SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGE MUSIC/PERFORMANCE IN OUR REGION.

 

I AM VERY PROUD OF THE QUALITY OF PERFORMANCES THAT STARS HAS CONTINUED TO OFFER  OUR COMMUNITY SINCE 2001 WHEN I JOINED OLIVE READERS COMMITTEE AND BECAME CHAIR IN 2007.   IT IS TIME FOR ME TO MOVE ON AND TRUST THAT THE BRILLIANT MEMORIES WILL REMAIN WITH US ALL.  THANKYOU TO EVERY MEMBER OF MY FORMER COMMITTEES, CURRENT COMMITTEE, VOLUNTEERS, AUDIENCE, PERFORMERS ETC. FOR ALLOWING ME TO ENJOY MY PASSION TO PRESENT THE ARTS IN OUR REGION. IT HAS BEEN MY PLEASURE.

TREASURER’S REPORT – 2018

 

I present the Treasurer’s Report for the financial year 1 January to 31 December 2018,

 

and audited accounts for the period. For the purpose of this report figures have been rounded.

 

Income for the year amounted to $15000 compared with $28800 for the previous year The main variations against the previous year were –

 

          No grants were received in 2018. No Donations were received compared with $1100 in 2017

 

          Concert ticket sales in 2018 were $9700 compared to $21200 in 2017 mainly attributable to the reduced number of events.

 

 

          Performers $12100 as against $21700 in 2017

 

          Advertising and Promotion $850 as against $2300 I n 2017.

 

          Catering and bar expenses of $2200 were offset by receipts of $2700

 

In 2018 STARS made donations/memberships of $1700 – to Big Sing, and to Musica Viva as our Third and final payment of our commitment to Aldinga Primary School music program.

 

In summary, 2018 showed a net loss of $3300 .

 

Retained earnings at 2018 year end of $5800 were made up of

 

          Cash at Banks $4800

 

          Plant and Equipment $1000 at depreciated value.

 

The accounts have been audited and the following statement has been made by the auditors.

 

‘In our opinion, subject to the effects of adjustments, if any, the financial report of Southern Theatre and Arts Supporters Inc presents a true and fair view in accordance with accounting policies.’

 

I commend the report and the audited accounts to members and move that they be received.

STARS

 

 

EXTRA-ORDINARY GENERAL MEETING

Held at The Show Hall, Willunga

Friday 15th March 2019, at 6.15pm

 

It was unanimously agreed by all those present at the AGM, and by unanimous assent from members who could not be present, that STARS be wound up forthwith and that the current committee should devise a plan for orderly disbursement of all current funds and assets, in accordance with the Constitution. (NB: Assets include the piano, which is stored at the show Hall.)

 

Wayne Anthoney to determine a method for archiving the STARS website so that it is not lost when we stop paying for the domain name and website allocation.

 

Wayne also to ask members for their permission to pass our mailing list to the Rec Park committee, so that they will continue to be notified of future events, in our area.

 

Carolyn Colling to contact the local National Trust committee with a view to having our many historical documents stored at the local repository. (Old Courthouse.)
