2015 AGM

Waverley Homestead,  10 March 2015

The 2015 AGM was conducted with most of the committee and several STARS members present.

Here follows chairman Carolyn Colling's report.

CHAIRMAN'S REPORT FOR AGM MARCH 2015

CURTAIN UP WAS THE THEME FOR 2014 AND THE LAUNCH WAS A GREAT SUCCESS WITH BELLY DANCING, CHICKEN TRICKS AND THE ENCHANTING MINAS AND ERNA BERBERYAN. MINAS IS ALWAYS WILLING TO COME TO STARS AND HE MADE MENTION OF THE ENTHUSIASM OF THE AUDIENCE AND THE COMMITTEE.  HE LAUNCHED THE PROGRAMME FOR THE YEAR AND GENEROUSLY PERFORMED WITH HIS WIFE.   MINAS IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ENSURING THAT A CONTACT AT THE ASO WAS MADE AVAILABLE TO ME AND I AM VERY GRATEFUL TO HIM FOR BEGINNING THE LONG PROCESS.

GRAHAM ORMSBY WAS THE GUEST SPEAKER AT THE AGM IN 2014 AND OUTLINED HIS PLANS FOR WILLUNGA 175 CELEBRATIONS. THE COMMITTEE REMAINED THE SAME FOR THE YEAR.

IN APRIL, STARS COMMITTEE WELCOMED THE RETURN OF LUCYNA OPALA WITH ‘THE YEAR OF THE UNSETTLED SUN’ EXHIBITION.   AS USUAL, LUCYNA PRESENTED SOME OUTSTANDING WEARABLE FELT AND SILK AS WELL AS SOME WALL HANGINGS AND MARK LLOYD LAUNCHED THE EXHIBITION AND PAID TRIBUTE TO HER ABILITY TO CREATE AS SHE GOES ALONG.   THIS WAS ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL ART EVENTS HELD AT STARS WITH SEVERAL ITEMS SOLD ON THE OPENING NIGHT.

THE CANCER COUNCIL MORNING TEA WAS AGAIN HOSTED BY NANCY WEISBRODT AND FEATURED A WONDERFUL POEM AS WELL AS A PERFORMANCE BY THE LITTLE SISTERS OF ABUNDANCE.  NANCY OUTLINED THE WORK OF THE CANCER COUNCIL AND THE GUESTS GAVE GENEROUSLY WITH $620 RAISED AT THE EVENT.

HELD ON MAY 24TH  THE DA PONTE PROJECT ‘MAKING MOZART’ WAS A NEW VENTURE FOR STARS AND CAME ABOUT WHEN CATRIONA BARR INVITED ME TO THE WORLD PREMIERE OF THE SHOW AT THE STATE OPERA VENUE THE PREVIOUS YEAR.   JOHN TIDEMANN AND I WERE SO IMPRESSED WITH THE CONCEPT THAT I ASKED MY COMMITTEE TO CONSIDER STAGING THE EVENT – AFTER MEETINGS WITH CATE WE SETTLED ON THE INSTITUTE IN MCLAREN VALE AS A LOVELY VENUE.     WITHOUT KNOWING ANY DETAILS OF THE OPERA THE LARGE AUDIENCE WERE DELIGHTED AT THE SHOW AND THE VENUE AND THE QUALITY OF THE INTERNATIONAL SINGERS.   CATE IS STILL HOPING THAT ANOTHER GROUP WILL PRESENT THE SHOW BUT TO DATE THIS HAS NOT HAPPENED.    I WILL LIAISE WITH HER ABOUT ANY POSSIBILITIES IN THE FLEURIEU THAT MAY BECOME AVAILABLE THROUGH OUR CONTACTS FOR THE STARSTRUCK 20TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR.

STARS SPONSORED THE CHARACTERS OF THE FLEURIEU EXHIBITION AT VARIOUS EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE AREA WITH SOME WONDERFUL PORTRAITS BEING ENTERED.

ON 7 JUNE, AMANDA RISHWORTH MP LAUNCHED A WONDERFUL EXHIBITION FIRE AND CLAY FEATURING THE POPULAR SOUTHERN FLEURIEU POTTER AND SCULPTOR MARK PEARSE.   CAMILLE AND BRIAN MAPLE ASSISTED IN SETTING UP THE UNUSUAL PIECES AND ONCE AGAIN WE HAD GREAT SALES FROM SUPPORTERS AND NEWCOMERS TO MARKS WORK.

THE WILLUNGA 175 BLACK TIE DINNER WAS HELD ON SATURDAY JUNE 21 AT THE REC PARK STADIUM – I WAS AWAY IN EUROPE FOR THIS EVENT BUT ELIZABETH BOYDELL AND WAYNE ANTHONEY MC  AND OTHER COMMITTEE MEMBERS ENSURED THAT THE SHOW WAS A WONDERFUL SUCCESS.   THE DECORATION WAS GREAT AND JUDITH BARR ENSURED THAT EVERY GUEST BOUGHT A TICKET OR TWO FOR THE LOTTERY.   THE ENTERTAINMENT ORGANISED BY STARS WAS OUTSTANDING AND FEATURED TANGO DANCE WITH LOCALS ADRIENNE AND ANDREW GILL FOLLOWED BY SIDONIE HENBEST WHO HAD THE AUDIENCE WANTING MORE.   TWO OF STARS OF WAVERLEY APPLICANTS AIDEN RYAN AND JORDAN GOUDY WELCOMED THE GUESTS WITH JAZZ MUSIC.    THE SUCCESS OF THIS EVENT HAS PROMPTED A RETURN CABARET WITH SIDONIE HENBEST STARRING AND WILL BE HELD AT THE SHOW HALL IN AUGUST.

IN JULY, WAYNE ANTHONEY OAM PERFORMED HIS SHOW PROFESSOR ORLANDO AS PART OF STARS CONTRIBUTION TO THE ALMOND BLOSSOM FESTIVAL.   IT IS ALWAYS A POPULAR EVENT WITH VISITORS TO THE FESTIVAL AND THE FARMERS MARKET AND CHILDREN AND ADULTS ALIKE LOVE IT.

IN AUGUST, MICHELLE MCCREA A STARS MEMBER AND MOSAIC ARTIST PRESENTED ‘GLIMPSES OF ITALY’ BASED ON HER RECENT TRAVELS TO NORTHEAST ITALY.

PROFESSOR DIANA GLENN THE DEAN SCHOOL OF HUMANITIES AND CREATIVE ARTS AT FLINDERS UNIVERSITY GAVE A MOST INTERESTING OPENING ADDRESS IN WHICH SHE DISCUSSED THE HISTORY AND EVOLUTION OF MOSAIC WORK IN ITALY AND RELATED IT TO MICHELLES CONTEMPORARY WORK.   CONGRATULATIONS TO CAMILLE MAPLE FOR CURATING THE THREE SUCCESSFUL AND INTERESTING EXHIBITIONS FOR THE YEAR AND FOR HER TIRELESS WORK MANNING WAVERLEY HOMESTEAD MOST DAYS AND ALSO FOR ASSISTING IN THE PRESENTATION OF THE ART WORK ON ALL OCCASIONS.

LUCINDA MOON IS A FAVOURITE PERFORMER AND FRIEND OF STARS AND SHE PRESENTED ‘DIALOGUE – THE ART OF ELEGANT CONVERSATION WITH GREG DIKMANS FLUTIST – THEY EXPLORED THE REPERTOIRE OF THE 18TH CENTURY MUSIC, SOME OF THEM  NOT SO WELL KNOWN TODAY BUT WERE CONSIDERED  AMONG THE BEST OF THEIR TIME.   AN INTIMATE AND INTERESTING PERFORMANCE ENJOYED BY DISCERNING AUDIENCE MEMBERS.

IN SEPTEMBER SAMANTHA RUBENHOLD AND ROBERT ENGLAND RETURNED FOR A SPRINGTIME IN WAVERLEY CONCERT.   THEY ALWAYS IMPRESS WITH BEAUTIFUL MOVIE SONGS AS WELL AS HIGHLIGHTS FROM OPERA BOTH PERFORMING DURING THE YEAR WITH STATE OPERA.  AIDEN RYAN PERFORMED HIS OWN COMPOSITION WHICH HE HAD PRESENTED IN HIS APPLICATION FOR A STARS OF WAVERLEY AWARD. THE PANEL LED BY MEREDITH BOWMAN AND INCLUDING LIBBY RAUPACH, LUCINDA MOON, JULIE HOWARD AND GAIL KELLETT HELD AUDITIONS IN OCTOBER WHEN A SHORT LIST OF 5 APPLICANTS PERFORMED.  I THANK MEREDITH AND HER PANEL FOR THE HARD WORK IN FIRSTLY FINDING APPLICANTS AND THEN JUDGING THE WINNER.

IN OCTOBER STARS PRESENTED OCHRE COAST POETS AT WAVERLEY HOMESTEAD WITH READINGS FROM DAVID COOKSON AND LOUISE NICHOLAS WHOSE WORK HAS BEEN PUBLISHED WIDELY.   POETS INCLUDING OUR OWN TESS DRIVER READ FROM THE NEWLY PUBLISHED ANTHOLOGY.

THE BUSY YEAR CULMINATED IN A GALA CONCERT AND THE PRESENTATION OF THE STARS OF WAVERLEY AWARD TO AIDEN RYAN.  STARS OF THE NIGHT WERE SIDONIE HENBEST AND PETER BUTCHER WITH THE ADDITION OF FARMERS MARKET CHOIR GETTING BIGGER AND BETTER.  BELLY DANCING, POETRY AND A COUPLE OF OLD BLOKES BATMAN AND SUPERMAN CREATING HAVOC.

I AM ALWAYS AMAZED AT THE WILLINGNESS OF ARTISTS TO GIVE THEIR TIME GLADLY WITHOUT A FEE AND I CELEBRATE THEM.   THANKS TO PETER COLLING, WAYNE ANTHONEY FOR LIGHTING AND SOUND AND THE MANY OTHER COMMITTEE MEMBERS WHO ASSIST TO ENSURE THAT THE GALA IS A FINANCIAL AND ENTERTAINING SUCCESS.

THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, STARS HOSTED A FEW OTHER EVENTS.   AN EVERY GENERATION PRODUCTION ONE NIGHT TWO PLAYS A COMEDY AND A ROMANCE WAS ADVERTISED THROUGH THE COUNCIL AND THE AUDIENCE ENJOYED STARS HOSPITALITY WHILST ENJOYING THE PERFORMANCE OF JOHN OVENDEN AND FRIENDS WRITTEN BY JOHN.

STARS ALSO SUPPORTED THE MUSICA VIVA MUSIC IN SCHOOLS VENTURE WITH A GRANT TO ASSIST THE PRESENTATION OF MUSIC IN DISADVANTAGED SCHOOLS.  SOME OF THE COMMITTEE WERE IN THE AUDIENCE AT HACKAM WEST SCHOOL TO SEE HOW OUR DONATION IS GIVING CHILDREN A BETTER CHANCE TO WITNESS LIVE MUSIC PERFORMED BY GREAT MUSICIANS.

EARLIER IN THE YEAR STARS HOSTED DADDYS LITTLE LEGEND MORNING TEA TO RAISE FUNDS FOR STARS MEMBER JEAN VAN DRIELS PROJECT – TO RAISE FUNDS FOR THE FLINDERS MEDICAL CENTRE FOUNDATION IN AID OF THE NEONATAL UNIT.   JEANS GRANDAUGHTER WAS A PATIENT IN THE NEO NATAL WARD AND THE FOUNDATION WAS SET UP TO ASSIST IN BETTER EQUIPMENT FOR CHILDREN NEEDING ASSISTANCE.   JEAN WAS VERY GRATEFUL FOR THE STARS SUPPORT AND THE COMMUNITY EMBRACED THE FUNDRAISER HELPING TO RAISE A LOT OF FUNDS FOR THE PROJECT.

IT HAS BEEN A BUSY BUT REWARDING YEAR WITH GREAT OUTCOMES AND AUDIENCE SUPPORT BUT A LOT OF HARD WORK.

TONIGHT WE ARE LOSING THREE MEMBERS OF THE COMMITTEE – NANCY WEISBRODT WHOSE FISHING COMMITMENTS AND JUST HAVING FUN WILL PRECLUDE HER FROM REMAINING ON THE COMMITTEE – SHE ASSURES ME THAT SHE WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR THE CANCER MORNING TEA AND FOR ANY OTHER ASSISTANCE THAT WE WILL REQUIRE – WE WILL MISS YOU IN THE KITCHEN BUT HOPE THAT YOU CAN ATTEND THIS YEARS EVENTS BECAUSE THEY WILL NOT BE THE SAME WITHOUT YOUR FEISTY AND WITTY PRESENCE.  THE OCCASIONAL POEM WILL BE MANDATORY NANCY.

ELIZABETH BOYDELL – HER ROLE WAS NOT ONLY A SECRETARIAL ONE BUT AN ADVISORY POSITION AND INVALUABLE TO ME OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS.   AS ELIZABETH HAS SAID, SHE WAS ONLY GOING TO DO ONE YEAR BUT HERE SHE IS – LAST YEAR THE TICKETING AND PRESENTATION OF THE DA PONTE PROJECT AND OTHERS WAS A HUGE JOB FOR EB – ESPECIALLY AS SHE ALSO HAS A FULL TIME POSITION.   I THANK YOU ELIZABETH FOR YOUR PERSONAL FRIENDSHIP AND SUPPORT AND I WISH YOU WELL.  YOU WILL BE SORELY MISSED.

JUDITH BARR INTREPID TRAVELLER, ORGANISER, RAFFLE TICKET SELLER, MC AND BEAUTIFUL SINGER IS RELUCTANTLY STANDING DOWN FROM THE COMMITTEE BECAUSE SHE IS CLEARLY TOO BUSY. LIKE NANCY, SHE IS AVAILABLE TO ASSIST IN ANY OF THE ABOVE ROLES IF TIME PERMITS.   I THANK YOU JUDITH FOR YOUR INSIGHT AND IDEAS AND ENTHUSIASM.

JOHN TIDEMANN WILL BE UNABLE TO TRAVEL TO COMMITTEE MEETINGS BUT HAS AGREED TO ASSIST IN HIS ROLE AS STAGE MANAGER ASSISTING THE BIG EVENTS FOR THE YEAR.   THANKYOU JOHN.

BRIAN READER HAS CONTINUED TO ASSIST ME WITH THE NEWSLETTER AND THE HISTORY OF STARS WHICH IS IMPORTANT TO ENSURE THAT WE CAN WATCH THE PROGRESS BUT LEARN FROM THE PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY HAD THE VISION TO FORM THE ORGANISATION. THANKS BRIAN FOR RETURNING THE HISTORY OF STARS.

STARSTRUCK 2015 IS AN IMPORTANT YEAR TO CELEBRATE THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF STARS AND I WELCOME SUE HOCKING TO THE COMMITTEE AS CO-ORDINATOR OF THE ADELAIDE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRAS EVENT AT TATACHILLA COLLEGE IN OCTOBER.  SHE AND HER COMMITTEE WILL DELIVER A MARVELLOUS OCCASION – I HAVE SPENT SOME YEARS ENDEAVOURING TO SECURE A VISIT FROM ASO AND FINALLY IT WILL HAPPEN IN OUR ANNIVERSARY YEAR.  SUE HAS WONDERFUL CREDENTIALS HAVING BEEN WITH THE CONVENTION CENTRE  AND HEADHUNTED TO DUBAI AND QUEENSLAND FOR PROJECTS.   HER RETIREMENT MIGHT BE ON HOLD THIS YEAR.

FINALLY, I AM PROUD THAT STARS CONTINUES TO SHOWCASE THE ARTS IN THIS REGION AND THAT WE ARE ABLE TO FOSTER THE TALENTS OF CREATIVE AND ARTISTIC PEOPLE IN OUR AREA THROUGH THE STARS OF WAVERLEY AWARD.  I HOPE THAT WE CAN CONTINUE TO HAVE A GROUP OF LIKEMINDED AND SUPPORTIVE PEOPLE ON THE COMMITTEE TO PRESENT A QUALITY YEAR OF EVENTS WHILST HAVING A LOT OF FUN AND REMEMBERING THAT WE ARE ALL VOLUNTEERS.

THANKYOU FOR YOUR FRIENDSHIP AND SUPPORT.
